A press statement from His Excellency the Minister of Energy

On the occasion of the opening and inauguration of Ad-Dur power & water plant by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, may God bless him His Excellency  DR. Abdul Hussain Bin Ali Mirza Minister of Energy in a ceremony, saying that this inauguration  reflects the interest of His Majesty for development projects in the country , His Excellency added , We are honored today to listen to the wise directives of His Majesty in every respect the importance of providing basic services to citizens, Electricity and water.

The minister pointed, The Electricity and Water Authority is keen to provide services of Electricity, Water, by working to develop and modernize the infrastructure continuously to ensure that achieve leadership and excellence in providing high quality services, and ensures the continuity of the flow of services to the consumer all the way to achieve satisfaction as a primary goal by Authority employees and to meet its needs for Electricity and water than his expectations. He said that the areas of work of the Commission has seen a quantum leap large kept pace with the requirements of the present prosperous and the future bright and the next phase of the stages of the National Action is the development achieved by the Electricity and Water sectors, which has the support and patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Amir may God bless him and His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and vice Supreme Commander, a reflection of what the Kingdom have reached of the advancement and development in all areas of development and civilization, where there is close correlation between achievement and the availability of excellence manpower, EWA has focused on the selection of skilled manpower in various disciplines.

The Minister stressed that the achievements of the Authority and which is clear from its outstanding achievements and activities of the concrete in the areas of its work contributes to the entry of new stage effect starting about the prospects for the future and keep pace with the era of technology basic foundation and civilized fixed roots and a clear vision of goals. It also reflects the citizens bear responsibility and keep up with the future all the givens and variables and tools.

The minister said, The expansion in the production of Electricity and Water to increase production plants matched by a growing demand of Electricity and Water by consumers, investors and owners of large projects and this requires the establishment of new production plants and expanding and strengthening the network of Electricity and Water Transmission to meet the growing demand for these services in the country of all sectors of the population and industrial and commercial, which significantly increased during the past ten years.

The minister added that the Authority continue to implement programs and plans of various development for the provision of Electricity and Water services, has achieved the Commission during the past few years a remarkable development and growth rates of standard quantum leap in the areas of its work, is through the establishment of of Ad-Dur power & water plant

Therefore the third license to private sector had been awarded to the consortium GDF French Suez and Gulf Investment Corporation in August 2008 to build a new plant for Electricity and Water.
He explained , the plant produced 400 MW of Electricity during the trial period in the summer of 2010 , the production capacity will increase by the start of commercial operation to 1234 megawatts of Electricity and 48 million gallons of water per day.
 

The Minister said, the cost of the first phase of the project is estimated at about U.S. $ 2.1 billion, the plant will supply Electricity at a fixed amount of 14 files per megawatt / hour and water at 350 files per cubic meter for 25 years from the date of the official operation of the project , which represents the duration of the contract that was signed on 28 August 2008.

 And will be the establishment of the first phase of the plant units generating of gas and steam in addition to the station for the desalination of sea water by reverse osmosis.
 
The plant began an initial production capacity of 400 megawatts of Electricity in September 2010 from 2 gas Turbines capacity of each 200 MW.

 And the minister said , The station consists of the following main parts:

1. Four units of Gas turbines with the capacity of each unit of almost 200 megawatts for production of Electricity.
 .
2. Two units of steam turbines with the maximum capacity of each unit 268 megawatts.

3. Sea water desalination plant with a capacity reverse osmosis Faculty of up to 48 million gallons per day.

4. Water treatment unit to make it viable for drinking.

The units will be used to produce electricity and gas dual fuel system (gas or diesel) to increase the reliability of the units to maintain the production of electricity with diesel fuel in the event of problems in the system of natural gas.

The Minister said The Electricity and Water Authority is building a main transmission station 220 KV as well as storage and pumping station for water to absorb the productive capacity of Ad-Dur power & water plant and transfer to demand areas in the Kingdom.

The minister stressed , These vital projects use as a pillar of plans to increase the energy that will enable the Government of Bahrain to provide Electricity and Water services for the housing units and projects in all regions of the Kingdom of Bahrain including Hawar Islands, and absorb more of the commercial and economic projects which is the lifeblood of the future for the development and prosperity of Bahrain.
